Julia Dyson, Partner & Head of Family Law at Coole Bevis, shares her perspective on supporting clients affected by domestic abuse and the vital role legal advice plays in protecting victims and rebuilding lives.
According to the Office for National Statistics, an estimated 2.1 million people in the UK have reported experiencing domestic abuse in the year ending March 2023. Domestic abuse remains one of the most widespread and damaging issues affecting individuals and families across the UK.
Domestic abuse can take many forms, to include:
- physical violence;
- coercive control;
- emotional abuse;
- isolation from loved ones;
- verbal intimidation;
- financial manipulation; and
- digital surveillance.
Often family law cases involve individuals who have experienced domestic abuse in one or more forms.
Julia Dyson, Partner and Head of Family Law at Coole Bevis, has worked closely with many such clients over her career. She notes that while awareness has grown, “far too many people still suffer in silence, unsure of how to safely leave or where to seek support.”
Legal Guidance
In her role, Julia and her team support clients access critical protections, including non-molestation orders, occupation orders, and support through divorce, separation, financial arrangements, and arrangements for children.
Julia said: “What many people need is a calm, clear plan. That starts with being heard, believed, and supported without judgement.”
