Jonathan is a Partner/LLP Member and head of the Leasehold and Block Management department. Jonathan specialises in advising on leasehold disputes and leasehold enfranchisement.

Jonathan qualified as a solicitor in 1992. Having initially gained experience as an insolvency litigation solicitor, he has specialised in leasehold disputes and leasehold enfranchisement since 1996.

His clients are predominantly freehold landlords with large property portfolios across England and Wales, but also include many tenant (leaseholder)-owned freehold landlords, management companies and RTM companies. Jonathan can also act for individual tenants (leaseholders).

Jonathan has built excellent relationships with managing agents, surveyors (both building and valuation) and Counsel.

He has successfully represented clients in the County Court, Court of Appeal, First-tier Tribunal Property Chamber and Upper Tribunal Property Chamber.

Jonathan’s areas of expertise include:

  • Recovery of ground rent, service charge and administration charge
  • Breaches of covenant, forfeiture of leases, recovery of legal costs
  • Right to manage claims under the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002 (CLRA 2002)
  • General property management advice relating to leasehold flats (e.g. construction of lease terms, statutory consultation, recovery of legal costs)
  • Both collective enfranchisement and lease extension claims under the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 (LRHUDA 1993)
  • Enfranchisement claims under the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 (LRA 1967)
  • Rights of first refusal under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987 (LTA 1987)
  • Variation of leases and applications to appoint a manager under the LTA 1987

Accreditations and achievements 

  • Notable cases that Jonathan has been involved in include Marine Court (St Leonards on Sea) Freeholders Ltd v Rother District Investments Ltd [2008] 1 EGLR 39 and Hastings Borough Council v Braear Developments Ltd [2015] UKUT 145 (LC).
